Multiple Disadvantage
Our standards are focusing on meeting the needs of survivors who are experiencing multiple disadvantage (i.e. homelessness, domestic abuse, substance use, mental health support needs, contact with the criminal justice system), recognising that the vast majority of survivors who are seen by the sector will have support needs around multiple disadvantage, and domestic abuse may look different for these survivors based on these co-occurring experiences.
Working with couples
Another common concern many workers across the sector face, is how to work safely with survivors when they remain in a relationship with the perpetrator – whether they are rough sleeping or in accommodation together. We will work with your organisation to ensure staff feel confident to work with survivors; prioritising their safety whilst also meeting the needs of the perpetrator to reduce the risk of further harm.
Perpetrators
Homelessness & supported accommodation services will be supporting perpetrators as well as survivors, therefore it is crucial that organisations are equipped with the knowledge to support those who are perpetrating domestic abuse, without increasing risk to the survivor, colluding with the perpetrator, and holding them to account for their behaviour.
